Fellow Aviators,

Pilots frequently ask me what they need to do in order to prepare for their flight physical. The answer varies from pilot to pilot, but there are a few things that everyone needs to do before they show up at their Airman Medical Examiner's office.

  1. Call me to discuss your health history, medications, class of medical certificate you need, and to get on the schedule. The sooner you call, the easier it will be to find a mutually acceptable time.

  2. Complete MedXPress. Medxpress is the FAA's online application for medical certification. It can be found here: https://medxpress.faa.gov/MedXpress

or by searching the internet for "FAA medxpress." This MUST be completed prior to your visit with me. Once this application is submitted, you will receive a confirmation number by email. Bring that number with you to your appointment. I am happy to help with any questions you may have about completing this online application.

  3. Review pertinent information from the AME guide if you have questions about particular ailments (now or in the past). You can search the guide here: https://search.usa.gov/search/docs?affiliate=dot-faa&dc=9698&query=&commit=Search

  4. Gather necessary medical records as hard copies for my review if necessary. For example, if you take a medication for your thyroid, I can usually issue you a medical certificate during the appointment if you bring the required documentation (medical record) from your treating physician. Paper copies are the easiest and most reliable.

  5. Bring a photo ID, confirmation number (from MedXPress), corrective lenses (prescription glasses, contacts, or cheaters), and a form of payment to your appointment.

  6. You do not need to be early to your appointment, but please do not be late.

  7. Don't use the restroom right before your appointment because I will need to collect a urine sample for protein and sugar testing as part of your medical examination.

  8. Don't tank up on water as this can increase your blood pressure. But, remember that you will also need to be hydrated enough to provide a urine sample as previously stated.

  9. Finally, if something comes up and you are running late, can't find my location, or need to reschedule, call me as soon as possible: 406-426-1901.

I hope this helps answer any questions you may have about prepping for your next flight physical!

Tailwinds,

MH
